In 2007 a series of massive forest fires broke out across Greece throughout a summer of heat waves. The most destructive and lethal infernos broke out on August 23, expanding rapidly and raging out of control until August 27 when fire fighters were finally able to bring them under control in early September. The fires mainly affected western and southern Peloponnese as well as southern Euboea. A total of 84 people lost their lives to the fires including several fire fighters.
